The First Joyful Mystery

by Fr. Francis Martin

An angel is wrapped in amazement,
at the Chosen of God,
the flower of Israel.

Rejoice graced one!
The Lord is with you!

Now the Virgin is amazed - and troubled.

Words which echoed through centuries
begin to take on flesh:

Behold a virgin will conceive and bear a son.
Behold you will conceive and bear a son.

Declare his name:
Jesus,

the One to save his people from their sins.
Son of David,
King of Israel,
Prince of Peace,
Father of the world to come.

How can I mother him
and not know man?

Listen O Virgin
The Spirit of creation will hover once again,
The Power of the Father will cast on you his shadow,

The Son, the Holy One will be your child.
He whom you conceived in your heart
will come to dwell in your body.
The Almighty attends upon your freedom.

The Living Flame approaches
her being catches fire
with all the longing of Israel,
with all the cries of Adam.
The world awaits your answer.

I am your servant O Lord.
O may your messenger’s words come to pass!

Mercy and truth now meet,
Justice peers from heaven,
while our earth produces its fruit.
The womb is filled with life,

The Word is made flesh,
Wisdom’s tent is now among us.
And we see his glory.
