Second Week of Advent
Thursday, December 8, 2016
The readings for the Third Sunday of Advent speak of prophecy, of action, of preparation and of fulfillment. God, through the Word, mediates his plan for salvation; He gives us the Word and the Liturgy by which we can receive the promise and experience its reality!
Isaiah prophesies that "they will see the glory of the Lord ... the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared" (Is 35:1-6)! The psalmist talks of God who acts on these very same promises prophesied by Isaiah and echoes our response, our desire to be a part of that action, "Lord, come and save us" (Ps 146:6-10). James tells us how we can become a part of that family of the just by living lives of patience, humility, forgiveness, and firmness in faith (Jas 5:7-10). And finally Jesus announces that He has come to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah, "Go and tell John what you hear and see, the blind regain their sight, the lame walk ... the deaf hear" (Mt 11:2-5)!
The words come full circle, from prophecy to fulfillment! We may not have experienced first hand the words and miracles of Jesus, but the power of the Word mediates the reality to us centuries later! What good news! As we approach Christmas, let us make the ultimate sacrifice of preparation and give ourselves entirely to Christ so that his Word, through us, might mediate his reality to others, bringing mercy, healing, and salvation to all the ends of the earth! – Bernadette Harmon for Fr. Francis Martin
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. (Isaiah 61:1)
