Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
ThursdayNovember 24, 2016
The Word has the power to change us, to bring us to a deeper conversion! So many saints have witnessed to this; St. Augustine was freed from the grasp of pleasure seeking upon reading the very words Paul writes in the Letter to the Romans on this First Sunday of Advent: "Let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and licentiousness, not in rivalry and jealousy" (Rom 13:13). This time of preparation gives us a new opportunity to examine where we need conversion in our lives.
Isaiah reminds us that we are on a journey to the Holy City (Is 2:1-5) and the psalmist rejoices in the journey to that city where those who love God will prosper (Ps 122:1-9)! Jesus tells us to be prepared, that some will be left behind when the Son of Man comes (Mt 24:37-44). Paul exhorts us to "throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light" (Rom 13:12) and Isaiah encourages us to "walk in the light of the Lord" (Isaiah 2:5). The Word Incarnate is calling us to keep our eyes on our eternal goal!
As this Advent season begins, we celebrate and anticipate the hope that we might experience a living encounter with the Word. Let us enter into the spirit of Advent with an open mind and a repentant heart so that when we hear the Word and receive the Eucharist the Holy Spirit might move us to great and heroic holiness! – Bernadette Harmon for Fr. Francis Martin
"Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come!" (Matthew 24:42)
