Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
ThursdaySeptember 15, 2016
Repeatedly in the scriptures we hear of God protecting his people, favoring the downtrodden, lifting up the lowly (Ps 113:1-8)! We see Jesus throughout his ministry reaching out to those who are cast out and looked down upon. Jesus does not preach fire and brimstone sermons damning us to hell, he gently preaches change in lifestyle, turning from self-righteousness to humility and service when He says: "Blessed are the poor ... the meek ..." (Mt 5) and "Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me" (Mt 25:40). In the Gospel, Jesus points out that even a crooked steward knows how to take a short term loss for a longer term gain (Lk 16:1-13)!
We must keep our gaze on Christ and on our end goal! Either we will spend an eternity in the loving presence of God, or we will be eternally deprived of God's presence. The path is clear, be pure of heart, have hearts of mercy and of compassion. Paul exhorts us to pray for everyone. Do not be exclusive in prayer or in service for "God ... wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth" (1 Tm 2:1-8)! To this end we must work proactively as the steward did, to take action now towards the longer term reward. Christ paid the price to restore us to our Father! All we need to do is accept his gift, pray, and obey his Word. We hear in the first reading that God "will never forget a thing they have done" (Am 8:7). May we be remembered for a life of mercy, compassion, and care for the poor as Jesus taught us!
"For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as ransom for all." (1 Timothy 2:5-6)
